European University Centre at Peking University held its annual council and board meeting at University College Dublin March 12-13

Council meeting at the Newman House

The Centre recently held its 4th annual council and board meeting on March 13 at University College Dublin who hosted the meetings. The meetings where attended by representatives from European member universities and by a delegation from Peking University led by Vice President Li Yansong. At the meetings various topics were discussed on how to further develop the Centre and strengthening the education and research cooperation among the involved member universities such as joint summer courses and joint study programs. It was decided that the Centre shall formulate a Strategic Plan and focus more on student related activities. Aarhus University from Denmark was welcomed as a new member to the Centre.

In connection to the council and board meeting, a symposium was organised by University College Dublin on March 12 on the topic “Innovation as a strategy for universities? Challenges and opportunities” with speakers from University College Dublin, Lund University and Peking University.

Master students from Lund University take courses in applied fieldwork at Peking University

For almost three weeks, students from the “Master’s Program in Asian Studies” at Lund University, will take courses in “Applied Fieldwork in China” at Peking University. The course program is a cooperation between the School of Government at Peking University and the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies at Lund University. The students will also meet with students from Peking University and visit the European University Centre at Peking University.

Guest lecture held for the European Studies Course by Mrs. Elena Avramidou, Education and Culture Attache, Embassy of Greece in Beijing

A guest lecture by Mrs. Elena Avramidou, Education and Cultural Attache from the Greek Embassy in Beijing was held on Friday 16 December at Peking University. The guest lecture was part of the European Studies Course organized by the European University Centre and School of Government which is offered to students a Peking University every fall.

Mrs. Elena give a presentation on the history of the Greek language and its diffusion in Europe, North Africa and Asia, and discussed the influence it has had on languages. Mrs. Elena also elaborated on some comparative aspects between Greek and Chinese language and philosophy.

2011 Peking University Study Abroad Fair

Close to 40 foreign universities and various education organizations attended the Study Abroad Fair organized by Peking University on December 6th 2011. The Study Abroad Fair was aimed at students at Peking University were the participating universities and education organizations could introduce themselves and give students the chance to ask questions and inquire on possibilities to study abroad.

The European University Centre at Peking University along with representatives from University of Warsaw, University of Milan, University College of Dublin, and Lund University participated in the Study Abroad Fair with individual stands and presentations.

Study visit to the Polish Embassy in Beijing with students taking the European Studies Course

As part of the course in European Studies that the European University Centre together with the School of Government at Peking University is organizing, the European University Centre on November 23 organized a study visit to the Polish Embassy in Beijing for the students taking the course. The students were first taken for a small tour around the Embassy, and then received by representatives from the Polish Embassy who made presentations and answered questions regarding the current Polish EU Presidency, Poland-China bilateral relations, and what it means to work as a diplomat and serve abroad.

Uppsala University Day at European University Centre at Peking University

On November 1st, 2011 Uppsala University organized a mini exhibition about possibilities to study as an exchange or master’s student at Uppsala University. The mini exhibition was held at the European University Centre at Peking University and was also visited by a delegation from Uppsala University lead by Vice-Chancellor Anders Hellberg.

Symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance and Social Development held at Peking University 29 Ocotober 2011

On 29th October the European University Centre at Peking University together with Lund University, Uppsala University, Peking University and Zhejiang University arranged a symposium on the topic “Antimicrobial Resistance and Social Development” at the middle hall at the Tan Siu Lin Centre for International Studies at Peking University.

The aim of the symposium was to gather experts from China and Europe from various academic fields to discuss issues related to antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance and how these relate to social development and sustainably in a wider perspective. Speakers at the symposium were: Professor Otto Cars, Uppsala University (Sweden), Professor Xiao Yonghong, Zhejiang University, Professor Kristian Riesbeck, Lund University (Sweden), Professor Wang Hui, Peking University, Professor Goran Tomson Karolinska Institute (Sweden), Professor Dong Hengjin, Zhejiang University, Professor Fang Weihuan, Zhejiang University and Professor Ruoyi Li, Peking University.

Master students fom Lund University held workshop at Peking University

SUDes Director Peter Siöström giving feedback to the students projects

Recently Lund University’s Sustainable Urban Design master’s program (SUDes) and Peking University’s Graduate School of Landscape Architecture (GSLA) completed a workshop in at Peking University from October 10-14 entitled ‘Sustaining Beijing Tomorrow’. This international collaboration involved 54 students from more then 12 countries and was marked by a series of guest lectures (including from the European University Centre at Peking University), a day long visit site, and a presentation of the student work.

The goal of the workshop was to investigate the transformation of the neighborhoods surrounding the National Gallery in Beijing. On the final day of the workshop, each student group was asked to present a vision for the future of the area with particular emphasis on sustainability.

This workshop marks and on-going partnership between the SUDes program at Lund University and the GSLA program at Peking University.

Course in European Studies at Peking University

The European University Centre at Peking University, together with the School of Government and the Center for European Studies at Peking University , is organizing a course in European Studies this fall 2011. The course was also given last year and is designed for Master’s and Ph.D students at Peking University. The course focuses on different aspects of Europe from a political, economical, social and cultural perspective and includes teachers from several of the Member Universities part of the European University Centre at Peking University.
